Many bridges are constructed with A36 steel. Likewise, buildings are frequently created with A36 steel because of its high strength and toughness. A36 steel is also used for components in the automotive, construction, heavy equipment, and oil and gas industries.
A36 Steel is the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) designation for carbon steel. ASTM A36 steel is the most common type of steel used in construction. Its properties allow the steel to be used in many applications, unlike higher-performance alloys.
ASTM A36 covers the chemical and mechanical requirements for carbon steel shapes, plates, and bars of structural quality for use in riveted, bolted, or welded construction of bridges, buildings, and general structural purposes. Bolts manufactured from A36 steel include ASTM specifications A307 and F1554 Grade 36 as well as SAE J429 Grade 2.
