Brass is an alloy of copper, zinc, and other elements, which also resists corrosion. Galvanized Steel. Galvanized steel takes a long time to rust, but it will eventually rust. This type is carbon steel that has been galvanized, or coated, with a thin layer of zinc.
Galvanic corrosion is the reason connecting carbon and stainless steel can lead to problems. Galvanic corrosion is when one metal causes another metal to corrode and break down. For this corrosion to start, there need to be three things: an anode (one metal), a cathode (a second metal), and an electrolyte (water is a common one).
The zinc has been applied to the steel to provide corrosion protection for the underlying base steel. If zinc is in contact on the surface with a more cathodic metal and the zinc becomes part of a bimetallic couple and corrodes, then the zinc is not performing its designed function of protecting the base steel.
Stainless Steel 300 Series A,D,E A A A,E Footnotes 1. Because aluminum can expand a large distance, the high hardness of 410 SS case harden screws may lead to screw to failure due to lack of ductility or stress corrosion cracking. NOTE: Organic coating to the screw will improve the corrosion resistance. Environments can affect the rate of corrosion
But even hot dip galvanized fasteners may not last long in marine service joining stainless parts together. The zinc is sacrificial to the stainless, and the small amount of zinc on a bolt, even if applied as a heavy coating, cannot sacrificially protect a large stainless item for long.
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, carbon, and a minimum of 10.5% chromium known for its strength and corrosion resistance. It comes in many different grades that are determined by the degree and combination of elements mixed with the iron, carbon, and chromium.
